Exercise: Benefits and Implementation in Long-Term Childhood Cancer Survivors

Presentation Description:
Emphasis on cancer survivorship is increasing yearly both for adults and children diagnosed with cancer. The incorporation of exercise as a standard component of cancer therapy has not yet been established. However a growing amount of research is directed at investigating the effects of exercise on cancer survivors. This presentation summarized recent evidence supporting incorporation of exercise following cancer diagnosis, reviewed exercise safety considerations and highlighted the CanWell Exercise and Education program for cancer survivors.

Panel Discussion – Finding the Line: Discussing Optimal Care of Obese Childhood Cancer Survivors

Be it resolved that on balance, aggressive management of obesity in childhood cancer survivors is justified despite the risk of inducing adverse psychological outcomes, including eating disorders. That statement was at the centre of this interactive debate-style presentation, the purpose of which was to discuss the optimal approach to treating obese childhood cancer survivors.

The St. Jude Lifetime Cohort: Lessons Learned

Presentation Description:
Adults treated for cancer during childhood are at risk for chronic health problems that increase in prevalence with aging and predispose to premature mortality. Systematic risk-based surveillance provides opportunities for early detection and intervention that may preserve health and quality of survival. This presentation described the study design and methods of the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study, research findings derived from cohort investigations, and their implications for clinical care and future research targets.

Presentation Description: 
So you’ve survived childhood cancer and you have some of the cold hard facts from doctors about what may be next for your health. But what about those socially awkward conversations and situations you may encounter as a survivor that aren’t in the medical books? Lead by two childhood cancer survivors, this workshop explored those socially awkward, embarrassing, difficult and sometimes funny questions and conversations, from responding to “How’d you get that scar?” to telling a new dating partner about your unknown fertility status.

Many childhood cancer survivors struggle with cognitive challenges as a result of their diagnosis and/or treatment and assistive technologies may be able to help. This workshop provided an overview of new assistive devices/technologies available to cancer survivors that can aid and improve cognition; features to look for and how to get your hands on this technology; and complimentary learning strategies to help you reach your academic and career goals.
