Posted on January 15, 2014 by admin

VIEW THE PRESENTATION

Presentation Description:
So you’ve survived childhood cancer and you have some of the cold hard facts from doctors about what may be next for your health. But what about those socially awkward conversations and situations you may encounter as a survivor that aren’t in the medical books? Lead by two childhood cancer survivors, this workshop explored those socially awkward, embarrassing, difficult and sometimes funny questions and conversations, from responding to “How’d you get that scar?” to telling a new dating partner about your unknown fertility status.

Speakers:
Vanessa Pastoric, BHSc, CCLS
Certified Child Life Specialist
Grand River Hospital, Kitchener

Natalie Wilson, MA, CCLS                                                                                                                                                   Coordinator and Facilitator

Posted on February 6, 2013 by admin

Presentation Description: This presentation addressed team member interaction with the “reluctant” parent – a parent who may be unwilling or disinclined to approve genetic testing. Additional issues covered in this workshop included: how to frame information in order to provide the facts that parents need to hear; how to interpret/convey the risks; how to identify and address parental/patient questions and fears; managing parental hesitation (e.g. fear of the results, fear of the burden of knowing, denial, cultural differences); and ethical issues arising from unexpected circumstances.

Associate Professor Departments of Paediatrics & Women’s Studies
University of Ottawa, ON
Consultant Bioethicist

Workshop D – Disclosures in Brain Tumors – A No Brainer?

Posted on February 5, 2013 by admin

Presentation Description: Every year, approximately 100 patients and their families are informed of the diagnosis of a pediatric brain tumor in Ontario.  This is the second most common malignant disease in childhood and although cure is more frequent than ever before, there are often lifelong disabilities and consequences of their treatments.  Affected children, their families, and healthcare workers will experience this tragic diagnosis each in their own way.  Does it matter how the bad news is communicated?  Is there a right balance between information, realistic expectations, and hope?  What factors promote coping in children, their families, and healthcare workers? This workshop identified unique aspects of disclosure in neuro-oncology, offered opportunities for role- play, and aimed to offer healthcare workers new avenues to approach this difficult task in their own and in their patients’ families’ best interests.

Workshop Facilitators:

Ute Bartels, MD
Assistant Professor
University of Toronto, Toronto, ON
Staff Physician
The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON

Cindy van Halderen, BASc, MSW, RSW
Paediatric Oncology Social Worker
McMaster Children’s Hospital, Hamilton, ON
