Workshop B – To Test or Not to Test: Am I my Second Degree Relative’s Keeper?

Presentation Description: This presentation addressed team member interaction with the “reluctant” parent – a parent who may be unwilling or disinclined to approve genetic testing. Additional issues covered in this workshop included: how to frame information in order to provide the facts that parents need to hear; how to interpret/convey the risks; how to identify and address parental/patient questions and fears; managing parental hesitation (e.g. fear of the results, fear of the burden of knowing, denial, cultural differences); and ethical issues arising from unexpected circumstances.
