2015 Satellite Education Day

Satellite Education Day will examine important learning needs identified by health practitioners working in community hospitals that provide treatment to children with cancer in collaboration with academic health sciences centers The program will provide attendees with practical strategies to manage identified issues in order to optimize the provision of care to pediatric cancer patients. Over 80 pediatricians, pediatric oncologists, nurses, and other interdisciplinary satellite staff will enhance their knowledge of clinical complications and side effects common to pediatric cancer patients and be exposed to new strategies to manage this unique patient population.

Weighing In on Fever and Neutropenia – Grounding Principles and Case Discussion

Presentation Description:
Fever in the neutropenic patient (FN) is a common medical emergency in oncology practice. This panel discussion reviewed the epidemiology of FN in our population and introduced recently published international guidelines adapted for use by POGO.  Case discussions were used to highlight principles of the guidelines and differences in tertiary practice that may impact the care of patients in the satellite centres.

Quick Hit: Sepsis and Early Warning Signs

This session provided a “quick hit” review of early warning signs in paediatric sepsis. Essential concepts for identification, intervention and management were highlighted in a case based discussion. Clinical tools related to paediatric early warning signs (PEWS) and sepsis were introduced.

Assessment and Management of Weight Loss in On-Therapy Patients

Presentation Description: 
Weight loss is a common side-effect of cancer and its treatment. This session discussed different assessment methods used to determine when and how to intervene to achieve weight gain and growth in the pediatric cancer patient. Options for providing nutrition support were discussed as well as the potential consequences of continued weight loss in this patient population.
