2009 POGO Symposium on Childhood Cancer

Posted on February 5, 2013 by admin

Brain tumors in childhood present major challenges in treatment, and in the impact of the disease and its treatment on the quality of life of the patient and the family.  There has been substantial focus on understanding the mechanisms of disease, and on refining treatment and increasing awareness of the morbidity and of the social and developmental impacts of these tumors on the child and the family.

The 2009 POGO Multi-Disciplinary Symposium on Childhood Cancer – Childhood Brain Tumors: New Perspectives – considered aspects of causation, from a molecular and genetic perspective, surgical, radiation, and chemotherapeutic advances, new concepts in rehabilitation and mitigation of neurocognitive impact, particularities of psychosocial care for both patient and caregivers, the impacts on the developmental trajectory, and palliative care. In short, it offered a 360 degree view of childhood CNS tumors in 2009 – the whole patient and the context in which the brain tumor journey is undertaken.

Mitigating the Adverse Effects of Treatment of Childhood Brain Tumors – New Directions

Posted on February 5, 2013 by admin

Presentation Description: Cranial radiotherapy is associated with cognitive impairments tentatively linked to the hippocampus, a neurogenic region of the brain important in memory and learning. The presenter of this session found that the presumed chronic injury inflicted by irradiation to the young rodent brain could be largely reversed by voluntary physical exercise or by transplantation of stem cells, and are now exploring the underlying mechanisms. Dr. Blomgren speculated that the same concepts are valid also in a clinical setting and explored this in detail in the presentation.

Klas Blomgren, MD, PhD
Professor
Department of Pediatrics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden
Physician
Department of Pediatric Oncology, The Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden

Telomere Maintenance in Pediatric Neuronal Tumors: Hope for a Better Ending?

Posted on February 5, 2013 by admin

Presentation Description: The ability of tumors to divide endlessly is one of the hallmarks of cancer.  Telomere maintenance is the main mechanism by which tumor cells achieve this goal.  This session examined how by using the unique model of pediatric low grade gliomas and neuroblastomas which tend to undergo spontaneous growth arrest, the role of telomere maintenance in these tumors can be defined, which can lead to the development of potential novel therapies to treat high grade pediatric gliomas and neuroblastomas.

Speaker:

Uri Tabori, MD
Neuro-Oncologist, Division of Hematology/Oncology
The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON
Scientist, Genetic and Genomic Biology
The Research Institute and the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain tumor Research Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON
