Facts About Childhood Cancer
Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in Ontario and in Canada (two children die of cancer every week in this province). In Ontario alone, over 400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and at any point in time over 3,000 of this province’s children require cancer care. Cure rates for childhood cancer in North America are greater than 80%. While this is great news, approximately 60% of these survivors will, in turn, face late effects as a result of their treatment, including: cognitive impairments that affect their ability to attend school and maintain employment, sterility, and secondary cancers, to name a few.
Ways to Help
Your support can make all the difference.
POGO works to develop new policies and programs that improve childhood cancer treatment and care for children, provide support to their families, allocate health resources, develop innovative research programs and provide professional education.
POGO needs the support of private donors and volunteers more than ever, so we can continue to do even more to make life better for children battling cancer, their families, and childhood cancer survivors.
Your Dollars at Work
Since 1999, donor support has enabled POGO to broaden the scope of its work and deepen its impact. POGO is currently raising funds in support of four critical priorities which will enhance the care and improve the quality of life of children with cancer, childhood cancer survivors, and their families. These are described below.Pediatric Oncology Financial Assistance Program (POFAP)
Families with a child in cancer treatment face tremendous out-of-pocket costs that can consume up to 1/3 of their after-tax income. This reimbursement program helps ease the financial burden for these families. Click here to learn more about POFAP.POGO Research Unit (PRU)
POGO research focuses on improving the prospects of survival for children with cancer and the quality of life of childhood cancer survivors. This research will increase the understanding of childhood cancer and impact the way childhood cancer care is delivered. SAVTI assists childhood cancer survivors who, as a result of their disease and/or treatment, have developed learning difficulties that interfere with the achievement of their educational and career goals. SAVTI’s main purpose is to facilitate a smoother transition from high school to appropriate education and employment. Survival rates in developing countries, such as those in Central America, are a disappointing 35% compared to 80% in North America and Western Europe. POGO’s CAPRI collaboration has helped to improve these survival rates by implemented two simple, yet effective programs in 7 Central American countries.
