Provincial Pediatric Oncology Satellite Program: A Guideline for Service
This document constitutes a guideline for the continuing delivery of the POGO vision of optimal childhood cancer care – namely, the provision of comprehensive, technologically advanced care in a humanistic environment, delivered as close to the child's home as is compatible with the level of care required, and leading to survival and quality of life equivalent to exclusively tertiary-based care, with the increased potential for cost effectiveness.
Consistent with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations, POGO recommends that all children in Ontario should be treated in a context where state-of-the-art expertise in all disciplines involved in the care of children with cancer is present. A dedicated, designated, tiered and integrated childhood cancer care network is mandatory if effective, equitable and efficient services are to be ensured for the small volume of children with cancer in the province of Ontario.
